ABOUT ICMM

The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) is a collaborative group of leading mining and metals companies created to strengthen the industry’s contribution to sustainable development and catalyse strong environmental and social performance. ICMM engages with all parts of society to enhance understanding of the benefits, costs, risks and responsibilities of the mining and metals industry in contemporary society. ICMM’s members include 27 mining and metals companies and over 3 national mining and commodity associations.5

THE ROLE

This position arises because the permanent senior manager is expecting to start her maternity leave end August 2020. The precise timing and duration of the contract will depend upon when she returns from maternity leave. Ideally there will be a 2 week handover period at either end of the maternity leave.

The successful candidate will manage and lead ICMM’s ‘Skills for our Common Future Initiative’, the world’s largest re-skilling programme for mining communities across the globe. The programme seeks to strengthen community and local economic resilience to shocks and disruption through developing strategic partnerships to deliver skills training at scale. This will include:

  • Identifying potential future skills scenarios related to automation, digitisation, mine closure and climate change.
  • Identifying the skills gap for mining, and for opportunities for mining communities to participate in the economy of the future.
  • Developing best practice approaches to skills planning and training to meet the needs identified.
  • Managing global partnerships to support delivery of the programme.
  • Measuring and monitoring progress of programme delivery.

Additional responsibilities will include supporting our mine closure programme, with a particular focus on progressing a multi-stakeholder partnership in either South Africa or Australia. Project work will include leading research and or facilitating workshops and dialogues with partners to support transition to a sustainable hybrid economic model that supports thriving communities, towns and healthy, functional ecological systems post mining. The role also provides support to ICMM’s work on tracking trends and emerging issues.

As a matrix organisation, ICMM also offers the successful candidate the opportunity to work across other aspects of the broader ICMM work programme, applying their experience in related areas in order to strengthen the industry’s contribution to the sustainable development agenda.

THE PERSON

ICMM is seeking an accomplished professional with interest and experience across the areas of social responsibility, community development, local economic development and community resilience. Additional experience in managing multi-stakeholder partnerships, technology and innovation and organisational culture and change management will be advantageous.

The successful candidate should be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline with related experience. First class writing, presentation, facilitation and communication skills are required including in connection with technical material. The successful candidate should have excellent project management, prioritisation and planning skills and proven relationship management skills across different groups (e.g. companies, NGOs, governmental organisations). The successful candidate will have knowledge of the mining and metals industry and a good working knowledge of sustainable development.

Compensation: An attractive salary, commensurate with experience plus benefits. Candidates ideally would have the right to work in the United Kingdom. However, given the current circumstances related to Covid-19 remote working options will be considered for exceptional candidates who may not have the right to work in the UK.
