Job Description:
 
Reporting to the Tailings Management Facility Superintendent, the Junior Engineer’s responsibilities will be daily tailings dam safety inspections, providing engineering support, managing civil earthworks projects associated with tailings dams and other related civil infrastructure, and assisting in the administration of the project including contractor monthly claims, design changes, and project change notices.
This position will be based on a 14 day in/14 day out shift rotation. The ideal candidate will have a minimum 2 years of relevant experience working in consulting engineering or the mining industry. Expertise in the areas of geotechnical engineering and tailings dam operations are definite assets.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of all safety policies and procedures affecting the Mining Operation and establish a safety culture by personally complying with all regulatory and company safety regulations at all times.
  • Perform construction monitoring services under senior direction. This work includes observation and documentation of construction activities, materials sampling, coordination with testing laboratories, and observation and testing.
  • Conduct daily inspections of tailings dams and water management facilities and issue daily reports.
  • Provide survey support as required by conducting drone and GPS surveys.
  • Conduct instrumentation readings such as vibrating wire piezometer readings and survey of survey markers and analysis of the results to confirm the results are within safe tolerance limits.
  • Oversee contractor’s progress and confirming construction as per the design drawings and specifications.
  • Liaise with site contractors and the project consultants as required and conduct site meetings. Assist with the compilation of tender documentation and as-built reports.
  • Perform other engineering activities as directed
 
Qualifications:
 
  • Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical or Mining.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required.
  • Good critical and conceptual thinking skills, and decision-making abilities,
  • Accountable and responsible for all daily tailings operational management activities as well as the on-site dam construction contractors.
  • Strong organizational/time management skills and attention to details.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations as it is a fast paced environment.
  • Tailings dam or large earthworks construction experience considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D are preferred.
 
Applicants located within 200 km from the mine site are preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.
