Reporting to the General Manager, the Metallurgist is responsible for developing and executing a lineup of activities aimed at improving and optimizing metallurgical processes and drafting the related procedures in order to meet company objectives and support the production department in ensuring consistency in product quality.
 
The purpose of the activities and projects developed and executed by the Metallurgist is to improve plant performance with regard to smelting and manufacturing processes and to ensure the mechanical and chemical properties of all products sold comply with established requirements, while simultaneously optimizing productivity and quality. This involves, for example, analyzing metallographic images, chemical analysis reports and other metal characterization methods and applying the full range of knowledge from this field of expertise to the company’s processes, procedures and systems. The Metallurgist may be called upon to apply various recognized approaches (Six Sigma, Kaizen, project management). All operations must comply with health, safety and environmental standards, productivity targets and per-unit costs. The Metallurgist also provides support to the production department to resolve operational problems and to provide technical support when modifications or changes are being rolled out. They also assist the commercial department in communicating with internal and external stakeholders. They may be asked to replace the Chemist as required.
 
Prerequisites
 
  • University education in metallurgy or the equivalent, combined with five or more years of metallurgy industry experience; or university education in metallurgy, combined with five years of metallurgy industry experience
  • Membership with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec and/or the Metallurgy and Materials Society  
  • Specialized training in quality assurance and/or Six Sigma, an asset
