Summary of Role: 
 
The Manager, Forestry will provide support to the Director of Lands, Resources and Consultations on forestry consultations and other natural resources files. 
 
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
 
1)  Provision of strategic leadership to better enable MNO’s Regional Consultation Committees to meaningfully be consulted on forest management plans.
2)  Provision of oversight of MNO economic development initiatives related to the forestry industry.
3)  Support the review of any proposed amendments to government policies that have the potential to impact Métis rights and the Crown’s Duty to Consult the MNO.
4)  Provision of management tools to steer the Lands, Resources and Consultation Branch to function at a higher level of overall performance including the management of certain aspects of the day-to-day operations such as the management of staff, finances, contracts, consultation and accommodation processes and external environmental contractors or consultants.
5)  Initiating and implementing a project management approach and system to the completion of several concurrent projects that include, among other things, internal staffing and external consultant support systems.
6)  Ensuring that all on-going LRC Projects are carried out in accordance with the assigned regulatory and internal timelines, budgets and other related requirements.
7)  Establishing and maintaining an effective Information and Project Management system for all branch operations.
8)  Collaborating with the other LRC Branch managers to make effective decisions associated with LRC Branch projects, operations and deliverables.
9)  Establishing and maintaining positive and productive working relationships with government agencies, industry proponents and other MNO branches.
10) Maintaining a thorough and complete record of consultations with respect to all consultation related activities undertaken by the LRC Branch on behalf of the MNO.
11) Ensuring the Crown’s legal Duty to Consult and Accommodate Aboriginal peoples is appropriately and adequately executed on LRC Projects.
12) Establishing and maintaining productive relationships between the LRC Branch and the MNO’s elected representatives.  
13)  Working in partnership with the MNO Way of Life unit to develop a Métis Traditional Land Use initiative to collect Métis traditional knowledge and to assist the MNO at the local, regional and provincial levels in making effective harvesting, land use and consultation related decisions.
14)  Traveling when necessary to communities to give presentations or attend meetings.  This may require overnight stays in the community and a varied work schedule, including work on some weekends.

Knowledge, skills & experience
 
Mandatory qualifications:
 
  • A Master’s degree is preferred in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies, Indigenous Studies or related field OR equivalent industry experience (at least 5 years) relevant experience in a project management or similar role.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in a project management role.
  • a combination of education and experience may be considered 
  • Effective management and organizational skills, including team building and the ability to work in a fast-paced multi-issue environment, serving a wide range of varied internal and external interests.
  • Demonstrated ability and capacity to critically analyze documents and synthesize findings in a clear and concise fashion.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports and communicate effectively both in writing and orally in order to establish and maintain a credible presence with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to liaise with MNO leadership and management, government partners and other external stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends, and travel throughout Ontario.
  • Dependability, strong work ethic, a willingness to learn and ability to take direction.
  • Effective interpersonal and liaison skills to work collaboratively with team members
 
Requirements:
 
  • Knowledge of Métis and/or Aboriginal policy and related Duty to Consult (and Accommodate) issues and principles or a demonstrated ability to quickly acquire knowledge of Indigenous and/or Métis specific matters including knowledge of the Métis Nation of Ontario’s mandate, structure, Métis history and culture will be a definite asset.
  • Experience working with government policy, programming and funding is preferred.
  • Financial &/or Accounting literacy is an asset.
  • PMP designation will be an asset.
  • Ability to drive a rented vehicle, driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract are required.
  • Knowledge of MS Suite software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
 
All positions at the MNO may require the following:
 
1.      Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain
2.      Completion and maintenance of Vulnerable Sector Verification
3.      A reliable vehicle (or ability to rent), driver’s licence, $1,000,000 liability insurance, and a clean driving record
4.      Flexibility to work extended hours as necessary
5.      Ability to occasionally travel within Ontario for limited periods of time
