Job Summary:
 
Under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor and/or the Underground Superintendent. The primary role of the Construction Leader is to perform construction mining tasks and is able to complete them efficiently with little to no supervision and will guide the less experience miners. The role of a Construction Lead Miner includes a wide variety of work such as forming, concrete work, vent doors, man doors vent walls, sump and fan installations and many more challenges.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
 
  • Inspect existing underground headings
  • Scale loose rocks and if required have the ability to recognize and recommend to the mine department that they re-evaluate the area for ground conditions to ensure overall safety in specific work area
  • Use of scaling bars, pneumatic hand-held drills, use of rubber-tired underground mobile equipment such as LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) units, scissor trucks, shotcrete sprayers and other support vehicles in a confined environment
  • Other tasks associated with this position may include, but are not limited to, the installation of vent tubing (air, water and pumping lines), other construction work and maintenance jobs as required.
  • Mentor and provide leadership to Construction Miner and Construction Labourer team members
  • Operate and understand the operations of various types of underground equipment.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
 
  • Ontario Hard Rock Underground Common Core – Full Basic
  • Required Specialty Modules: U0085a, U0085c & U0086
  • Basic literacy (read, write, basic math and read blue prints) (required)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a related construction role
  • CWB Certified (preferred)
  • Knowledge of the mining industry underground environment
  • Must understand underground work environment
  • Must understand responsibilities of leadership
  • Ability to read civil prints
  • Basic understanding of mine regulations pertaining to task
  • Ability to conduct risk assessment of specific task
  • Understanding of work related procedures and standards
  • Ability to recognize and resolve problems as required
  • Ability to adapt to a varying work environment often requiring the employee to develop new and innovative work methods
  • Ability to multi task and work effectively
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently
 
Pre-employment Requirements:
 
  • FMTM (Formation Modulaire du Québec) or Underground Hard Rock Mining Common Core (Ontario)
  • Permis Général d’Explosifs or able to obtain one as soon as possible
  • Drug test
  • Medical
  • Valid drivers permit
