Location: Northern Quebec (100km south of Deception Bay, 1800km north of Montréal), Canada
Rotation: 14 days on and 14 days off
Shift Length: 11 hours or 11.5 hour shift
Travel: Commercial flight from airport closest to point of hire to Rouyn-Noranda or Montreal
Accommodations: Camp

Job Summary:
 
Under the supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent and/or the Project Manager, the primary role of the Mechanical Foreman is the direct supervision the underground and surface mechanical personnel to ensure that all mobile and fixed equipment is maintained, repaired and functioning according to project requirements and safety standards. The role will coordinate activities closely with the Mine Development team.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
 
  • Ensure all required mechanical repairs, maintenance, testing, and installations are completed properly, i.e. to regulatory and company specifications, and on time
  • May be required to perform “hands-on” maintenance tasks depending on requirements and staffing levels
  • Organize and plan work for direct reports
  • Supervise, mentor and direct reports in their assignments
  • Apply disciplinary procedures as required
  • Enforce site and company policies
  • Assist Maintenance General Foreman or Maintenance Superintendent with preventative maintenance planning of mobile and fixed equipment
  • Maintain mechanical parts and supplies inventories at optimal levels (factoring in both cost and risk of downtime)
  • Ensure all direct reports are qualified and properly trained for assigned tasks
  • Communicate with cross-shifts to ensure continuity of assignments by maintaining and reading logs, meeting with peers and coordinating work
  • Inspect completed work to ensure it meets quality/safety standards
  • Redirect crew activities in response to unforeseen or unplanned developments
  • Support and communicate with project management team as required
  • Request and coordinate assistance from maintenance group as required to complete assigned tasks and maximizing productive time
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical problems and recommend/implement remedial actions
  • Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform his duties in a safe and efficient manner
  • Must be able to follow proper procedure to ensure safety and to control equipment damage

Work Experience:
 
  • Required: 8- 10 Years as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, or Industrial Mechanic/Millwright Lead role with a minimum of 3 years in mining
  • Preferred: 3-5 years’ experience in supervisory role
  • Knowledge of industrial mobile and fixed equipment maintenance, preventative and predictive program planning
  • Ability to understand work from blueprints, schematics, sketches, etc.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and monitor work for employees/crews
  • Knowledge of rigging and slinging heavy components Ability to mentor and encourage others
  • Ability to read, and understand Hydraulic/Electrical Schematics
  • Ability to use and understand Engine/Powertrain Diagnostic Software, both Handheld, and computer based
  • Ability to use/understand parts and service manuals, able to make parts lists for repairs required and or use service manuals to assist in diagnostics, and proper repair procedures
  • Ability to Service/Diagnose Diesel Engines of many types and makes
  • Ability to Service/Diagnose All Powertrain/Brake Components of Many types and makes
  • Computer literacy required working with spreadsheets, business systems (i.e. JDE procurement), and email.
  • Ability to multi task and work effectively
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently
 
Health and Safety:
 
  • Follow Company and Client health and safety standards and report all unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor
  • Responsible for the use and maintenance of all safety equipment, i.e. PPE, lanyards, warning signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.
  • Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure that workers are qualified and capable to safely performing the assigned work
  • Work in accordance with local legislation
 
Pre-employment Requirements:
 
  • FMTM (Formation Modulaire du Québec) or Underground Hard Rock Mining Common Core (Ontario)
  • Permis Général d’Explosifs or able to obtain one as soon as possible
  • Drug test
  • Valid drivers permit

The primary role of the Mechanic is to perform preventive maintenance and repairs to diesel, electrical, hydraulic and air operated equipment.

Under the supervision of the Superintendent/ Shift Supervisor, the primary role of a Cagetender is operate mineshaft conveyances which may include skips and/or cages and other devices that are used to move workers and material within the mine shaft safely.
