- Translate technical uncertainty into key value drivers and use extensive experience to identify critical technical risks and upsides for transactions
- Lead technical aspects of opportunity assessments, including the identification of what “isn’t on the page”
- Optimise risk and reward to maximise value and deliver the best bottom-line for the organisation
- Lead internal and external teams to efficiently and effectively assess targeted projects on short timelines in competitive situations
- Serve as key pivot point between Commercial and Technical teams – facilitating 2-way flow of information, integration and use of best practices within BHP and across industry
- Leverage advanced internal and external networks for business intelligence and due diligence
- Develop strong relationships built on experience and trust with VP and ELT level stakeholders
- Develop and clearly articulate complex technical issues and business cases to senior stakeholders
- Develop position papers, Board papers, CEO and other ELT briefing materials
- Willingness to travel at short notice and spend extended periods of time on the road for due diligence.
- B.Sc. Engineering or equivalent with Mining or Geotechnical specialization
- Advanced degree in commercial or business related field preferred
- 15-20+ years of experience spanning mining consultancy, operations, direct investing or commercial roles
- Deep technical experience spanning commodities (strong preference for copper and nickel), the technical chain (resource through planning) and mining methods
- Operational experience at open pit and/or underground mines preferred
- Proven experience assessing projects in a number of jurisdictions globally and spanning project stages (advanced exploration through producing)
- Extensive experience with geological interpretation and resource estimation
- Extensive experience with strategic mine planning processes; blending requirements related to geology, resources and reserves, mining engineering and processing to achieve optimal outcomes
- Proven experience identifying unique angles to extract value others do not see with an equal ability to efficiently decline projects that don’t merit further analysis
- Experience putting capital at risk with investment firms, juniors or intermediates, is highly desirable
- Proven ability to develop and effectively communicate (written and oral) technical, commercial and strategic insights, analyses and outcomes to senior management (including writing Board level papers)
- Exceptional presentation and communication skills (oral and written), with ability to structure and present complex ideas and information in a simple, articulate, balanced and persuasive way
- Effective in managing and influencing multiple, senior and varied stakeholders, both internally and externally
- Deep understanding of core technical talent across the industry – including an extensive network and seniority to secure the right expertise at short notice
- Leadership experience to successfully contribute to the culture and performance of technical and business development teams
- Motivated self-starter and team player with a high level of maturity, excellent people and project management skills and ability to function in an entrepreneurial atmosphere
- Able to work in small high-performing teams with a hands-on approach and do whatever it takes to make a project successful
- Comfortable with ambiguity and constant change; the ability to work in a fast-paced environment is a must
We are seeking an individual with deep and recognized technical experience, across commodities and the mining value chain on a global scale, who will serve as a key technical lead on BHP’s Business Development team.
This role will provide leadership in the provision of Project Management Services to ensure that the people, systems, and processes - from Mine to Port - are ready for commissioning and operation at handover.
Provides leadership to a team or teams focused on the strategic management of health and safety related issues, provisions and initiatives across the organization.
