We are seeking an individual with deep and recognized technical experience, across commodities and the mining value chain on a global scale, who will serve as a key technical lead on BHP’s Business Development team. This is an exciting opportunity to combine an extensive technical background, “good nose” for mining investments, and commercial mindset in a unique role, as the Business Development team strives to increase BHP’s exposure to future facing commodities such as copper, nickel and fertilizers through value accretive acquisitions. An individual in this role will lead all technical aspects of global growth opportunities spanning exploration and development stage projects and corporate M&A.

In this role, you will:

  • Translate technical uncertainty into key value drivers and use extensive experience to identify critical technical risks and upsides for transactions
  • Lead technical aspects of opportunity assessments, including the identification of what “isn’t on the page”
  • Optimise risk and reward to maximise value and deliver the best bottom-line for the organisation
  • Lead internal and external teams to efficiently and effectively assess targeted projects on short timelines in competitive situations
  • Serve as key pivot point between Commercial and Technical teams – facilitating 2-way flow of information, integration and use of best practices within BHP and across industry
  • Leverage advanced internal and external networks for business intelligence and due diligence
  • Develop strong relationships built on experience and trust with VP and ELT level stakeholders
  • Develop and clearly articulate complex technical issues and business cases to senior stakeholders
  • Develop position papers, Board papers, CEO and other ELT briefing materials
  • Willingness to travel at short notice and spend extended periods of time on the road for due diligence.

About You

  • Advanced degree in commercial or business related field preferred
  • 15-20+ years of experience spanning mining consultancy, operations, direct investing or commercial roles

Attributes, Skills & Experience

  • Deep technical experience spanning commodities (strong preference for copper and nickel), the technical chain (resource through planning) and mining methods
  • Operational experience at open pit and/or underground mines preferred
  • Proven experience assessing projects in a number of jurisdictions globally and spanning project stages (advanced exploration through producing)
  • Extensive experience with geological interpretation and resource estimation
  • Extensive experience with strategic mine planning processes; blending requirements related to geology, resources and reserves, mining engineering and processing to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Proven experience identifying unique angles to extract value others do not see with an equal ability to efficiently decline projects that don’t merit further analysis

About You Cont.

  • Experience putting capital at risk with investment firms, juniors or intermediates, is highly desirable
  • Proven ability to develop and effectively communicate (written and oral) technical, commercial and strategic insights, analyses and outcomes to senior management (including writing Board level papers)

  • Effective in managing and influencing multiple, senior and varied stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • Deep understanding of core technical talent across the industry – including an extensive network and seniority to secure the right expertise at short notice
  • Leadership experience to successfully contribute to the culture and performance of technical and business development teams
  • Motivated self-starter and team player with a high level of maturity, excellent people and project management skills and ability to function in an entrepreneurial atmosphere
