The Senior Electrical Power Systems Engineer is responsible for performing engineering design and studies for various electrical distribution and substation projects (from 4kV up to 230kV voltage levels).  The successful candidate will prepare electrical protection and control design deliverables, and/or physical layouts for medium and high voltage substations.  The Senior Engineer will establish project strategy, review drawings and ensure elements of design and detailing adhere to jurisdictional requirements and will liaise with all key stakeholders.
 
Primary Job Duties
 
  • Design substations utilizing client standards including bill of materials, yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, ground grid, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC and DC power systems and cable lists
  • Design protection and control scheme; including CT selection, relay wiring design and protection parameter selection using IEEE standards and applicable codes
  • Prepare calculations and equipment specifications
  • Prepare scope of work, estimates, schedules, budgets, specifications and reports
  • Prepare new and modify existing relay drawings including relay panel arrangements, single lines, three lines, AC and DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring
  • Develop and evaluate plans for major projects
  • Coordinate with other discipline departments, such as civil/structural/automation to integrate packages and work activities
  • Progressive design and project management responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to junior team members
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel
  • Some marketing responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Essential Job Requirements & Experience
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
  • Minimum 10 years’ related medium voltage and high voltage (4kV, 69kV and above) power distribution and substation design experience and experience with power systems including: power systems studies (load flow and protective device coordination using Easypower, SKM and ETAP), power apparatus in utility and mining projects, project scopes, project schedules and deliverables
  • Extensive knowledge in engineering standards, codes and guidelines
  • Strong industrial experience, with experience in surface and underground mining
  • Knowledge of mining related processes a definite asset
  • Extensive computer knowledge in industry applications, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project
  • Able to ensure that all programs and controls maintain a safe operating environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with exceptional report writing skills
  • Effectively liaise with engineers, designers and specialist to ensure client needs are met
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment to meet tight deadlines
  • Valid Driver’s Licence with access to a personal vehicle
  • Willing to travel
  • Fluent in English (written and oral)
