PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
 
The Senior Mine Engineer is responsible for the Technical Services Department, including short and mid-range mine planning; mine surveying; ore control; blast hole and stacker sampling; project management of the Eder Mining Operations; ensuring adherence to the site’s Ground Control Management Plan; reporting of mine Reserves and Resources; documenting of relevant geologic information; creating pit designs; overseeing drilling, blasting, and stacking contractors on site; and providing technical guidance/support for the Mine Department and the Plant, as well as other departments as required. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DUTIES:
 
  • Safety is a value at Carlota, and it guides all work that occurs at KGHM International.
  • Supervise Technical Services Department: short range mine engineer, mine geologist, lead surveyor, and fully optimize this group’s time and efficiency.
  • Develop short and mid-range mine plans utilizing the most current pit designs. Focus will be on 18-Month Forecasts that are updated monthly.
  • Coordinate geotechnical monitoring activities for the West Lobe highwall, supervise geotechnical activities on site, and create geotechnical recommendations to allow for safe mining, with the support of corporate geotechnical engineers.
  • Manage project deliverables for feasibility of Eder North deposit, including economic valuations of geologic targets, coordinating infill drilling, supervising dump designs and stacking sequence, and designing geotechnical-compliant pits.
  • Manage mining contractors for drilling, blasting, stacking, and pioneering pre-stripping, reviewing and approving invoice items on a monthly basis.
  • Coordinate technical evaluation planning process and assist in long and short-term projects (i.e. dump design; third party engineering studies for closure; creating and updating SOP’s).
  • Coordinate projects related to the safe and sustainable closure of the Carlota Mine site.
  • Assist in the creation, refinement, and implementation of the short term mine plan (material sequence; ore delivery; access planning; pit design; shot muck inventory; blast design and planning; dump sequencing) to meet the Life of Mine plan.
  • Assist with end of month reporting and surveying.
  • Assist Plant department with Acid Plans and inventories.
  • Assist in developing accurate metal plans, particularly for budgeting purposes.
  • Work directly with Corporate Technical Services group to communicate and document mining and metallurgical progress, as well as geologic information.
  • Coordinate with Mine Operations and Plant departments to ensure the mine plan is followed.
  • Train and develop junior engineer, geologist, and surveyor for advancement within the Technical Services Department.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  
 
  • Previous Related Work Experience Required
  • Minimum of 5 years of mine engineering experience - open-pit mining operation preferred, but not required.
  • Geotechnical experience or previous exposure to mining at geotechnically-challenging operations an asset.
  • Mine Operations/Supervision experience would be an asset. 
 
Education Required
 
  • A bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a closely related field is required. 
  • Knowledge of mine planning, ore control, surveying, spreadsheets, and drill and blast process is required.
 
Special Skills and/or Knowledge Required
 
  • Excellent analytical, management, organization, communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to perform multiple tasks with various levels of responsibility is required.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work safely and in a team environment and communicate well with others.
  • Be a leader and motivator.
  • A working knowledge of MineSight or other mine planning software package is preferred.
  • Experience with acQuire, JDE, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office is preferred.
  • Experience with Reutech monitoring equipment and software an asset.
