Function
 
This position is responsible for operation and training of users of light (confocal, wide-field epifluorescence, and various transmitted light modalities) and electron beam (both transmission and scanning) microscopes in a multi-user facility.  Users are from throughout the Faculty of Science, as well as other fields and industry, but predominantly from the biological sciences. The incumbent will be required to work closely with researchers and students in the biological sciences on experimental design, sample preparation, data collection and analysis, as well as providing training and performing maintenance on the instruments in the facility.  This position reports to the Director of the Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility.
 
Representative Responsibilities
 
• Operation and routine maintenance of a confocal microscope, light microscopes (equipped for wide field epifluorescence, differential interference contrast, phase contrast, dark field, and bright field illumination), flow cytometery equipment, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, sample preparation equipment (cryo ultra microtome, high-pressure freezer/freeze-substitution system, critical point dryer, etc.) and various digital image capture and processing hardware and software.  
• Training researchers (including faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates) in the use of instruments and software. 
• Optimization of preparation and/or data collection for difficult specimens. 
• Consulting with internal and external users regarding determining appropriate instrumentation, sample preparation, and data analysis techniques. 
• Sample preparation for biological and materials science users. 
• Assisting with preparation of manuscripts, conference presentations and grant applications involving microscopy.
• Purchasing and managing supplies for sample preparation and the day-to-day operation of the facility, and maintenance of inventory (including a Chematix inventory). 
• Providing backup and assistance for other staff members in all areas of operation. 
• Engage in activities (attending conferences, participating in workshops, keeping up to date with the literature) to maintain a current skill-set and up-to-date expertise in relevant imaging and image analysis techniques.
 
Requirements
 
• Advanced knowledge of optical and electron microscopy, and their applications in the biological sciences is essential.
• At least a B.Sc., ideally a postgraduate degree, with significant experience in biological sciences, and three years’ experience in light and electron microscopy.
• Knowledge of histology and other (e.g. immunostaining) protocols, experience with live-sample imaging, biological sample preparation, flow cytometery, ultramicrotomy, and digital imaging and image processing.
• Experience with industrial sample processing would be an asset. 
• Demonstrated organizational skills and excellent interpersonal skills
• Strong written and verbal communications.
