We are currently seeking a Surface Construction Manager to join our Voisey's Bay Mine Expansion Project Team for our remote mine site in Voisey's Bay, Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This project term position will be working from home office with regular travel to Voisey's Bay.
 
The Surface Construction Manager will be responsible for the effective management of the various contractors for the execution of the surface construction activities at the VBME Project. This manager is also responsible for the implementation of, and adherence to, best practices for construction management in order to achieve the most efficient performance from the various site-based contractors, all while providing leadership to ensure effective Safety and Environmental procedures are being followed for all construction work.
 
In this position, you will:
 
  • Lead the execution of all surface construction activities for the Project at the Voisey's Bay site;
  • Participate in, and contribute to, the detailed development, and subsequent updates, of the execution plan for the surface construction on site;
  • Participate in, and contribute, to the development, and subsequent updates, of the underground mine construction schedule to help enable successful execution of all construction for the total site;
  • Conduct detailed constructability reviews of engineering drawings and specifications during the design phase;
  • Assist in the technical activities as part of the procurement process for contractor selection;
  • Participate in the development of logistics plans with the supply chain department;
  • Report to the project management team, through the Site Manager, on all matters relating to surface construction;
  • Provide guidance, direction and assistance to the civil and surface construction contractors throughout all phases of the project;
  • Detailed monitoring, coordinating, and auditing of contractor's productivity, progress and overall performance for the surface construction area through the maintenance of high visibility in the field;
  • Work collaboratively with the Health, Safety & Environment teams to ensure full contractor compliance with established safety procedures and standards;
  • Assist with safety audits and investigations;
  • Ensure that work is completed in accordance with contract scopes while following approved project change procedures where deviations occur;
  • Make timely decisions to support the design schedule;
  • Review the contractor's deliverables and person hours against proposal targets and identify areas of inefficiencies to permit the implementation of continuous improvement plans as needed;
  • Represent the owner in approval of construction inspection and test records;
  • Assist commissioning in the preparation and assembly of pre-commissioning documentation;
  • Monitor the preparation and accuracy of as-built documentation;
  • Work with other functional groups in the site Project team to clear road blocks to support efficient and high-quality construction;
  • Establish an effective and cooperative working relationship with the existing Operations personnel in order to work towards mutually successful outcomes.
 
About You
 
  • 11+ years' experience in a management role, preferably in a project environment on industrial projects.
  • University degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical, piping or civil / structural).
  • Knowledge with high voltage electrical systems.
  • Previous management of multiple construction contractors simultaneously as part of the Project Management Team.
  • Good understanding of budget tracking and working within department budgets.
  • Development, coaching and training coordination of all direct reports to ensure the team succeeds.
  • Proven success in large scale industrial projects; experience in field leadership roles considered a strong advantage
  • Proven field experience of cold weather civil and surface construction activities especially at remote sites.
  • Demonstration of knowledge with respect to environmental requirements at remote sites.
