Crisis Counsellor

Under the supervision of the Shelter Coordinator at the Three Fires Ezhignowenmidwaa Women’s Shelter, the Crisis Counselor is responsible for providing crisis counselling and support to women in abusive situations. This person will fulfil the Shelter mandate while abiding by the Walpole Island First Nation philosophy, policies, and regulations.
Requirements:
• Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent
• Post-secondary diploma in the Social Sciences field preferred
• Must have CPR/First Aid or willing to obtain
• Must be willing and available for training
• Must be able to work variable times (evenings, over-night, weekends and holidays)
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation
• Subject to Criminal Records Check
• Mandatory 40 hours paid training & 40 hours paid job shadowing upon accepting the role
Responsibilities:
• Interview clients to assess the situation, determine services required, prioritize needs of the clientele and provide crisis counselling
• Actively participate in fulfilling the mandate of the Ezhignowenmidwaa Women’s Shelter
• Provide appropriate support and advocacy as needed, including client transportation
• Assist clients with discharge procedures including all paperwork, housing options, legal referrals, personal after-care plants, etc.
• Maintain appropriate case management and complete confidentiality with regard to client and staff matters
