About the Position

This position is responsible for the overall management of the ALS Environmental businesses in the Peace River Region. The ALS Environmental laboratories and depot service centres provide environmental and agricultural analytical testing services to industry, environmental consultants and government.
 
Responsibilities include implementing the corporate direction, vision and goals as well as overseeing the day to day operations of the laboratory operations. Accountability includes achieving the budgeted financial performance and profitable growth for the operations while adhering to ALS Environmental compliance, quality, client service and best practice standards

 
Specific Responsibilities
 
Safety:
• Ultimate responsibility for the safe operation of all locations;
• Ensure the ALS Group Corporate OHS&E system is in place and comply with all applicable provincial and federal regulations as well as ALS Group policies ;
• Ensure the equipment and the environment at each location is appropriate to maintain a safe work environment.
• Ensures that appropriate occupational health & safety practices and corporate compliance initiatives are being followed within the laboratory:
• Fosters and actively promotes work safe programs ;
• Maintains a clean and safe work environment ;
• Ensures that all Corporate Compliance initiatives, reports and practices are adhered to.
• Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures ;

Financial:
• Ensure the business is run according to the Strategic Vision for the region and Business Plan for growth and profitability;
• Responsible for achieving budgeted EBIT and ROS targets ;
• Establishes and monitors cost controls to ensure the business stays within budget.

Client Service and Business Development:
• Ensures the client service provided is consistent , of high quality, and meets ALS Group guidelines;
• Ensures the service provided meets and exceeds client expectations ;
• Develops business relationships with key client representatives ;
• Attends and is active in associations attended by our clients;
• Keeps up to date on market needs and changes in the marketplace;
• Involved with the formulation and implementation of a local business strategy (product positioning, key clients / markets and pricing);
• Develops Business opportunities in the Environmental local market as well as provide assistance to the Business Development Manager and local sales team.

Quality:
• Fosters a working environment that ensures quality targets are met or exceeded;
• Ensures that the quality of the analytical data produced is maintained at a level that meets or exceeds company and market acceptable standards;
• Ensures laboratory equipment is of the standard required to meet or exceed Data Quality Objectives (DQOs);
• Ensures laboratory staff are trained in all aspects of the Quality System and adhere to the SOPs and principles of the quality system;
• Assesses the results of QA/QC audits and implement improvements as required;
• Ensures root cause investigations are properly conducted for corrective actions and solutions are effective.

Operations:
• Ensures the laboratory is suitably equipped, staffed and that approved methodologies are used for the provision of a quality service to clients;
• Ensures the required turnaround time for samples is achieved and maintained whilst ensuring the highest quality of results for clients ;
• Oversee any assigned service centre depot locations within the region;
• Monitors, suggests and implements ways of increasing productivity and efficiency ;
• Advises on the recommended purchase of capital equipment and the preparation of capital equipment purchase requisitions (CEP's) as required;
• Prepares the annual operating budget for the laboratory as well as strategic business plans
• Ensures the efficient running of the laboratory including the co-ordination of resources and staff within the laboratory budget;
• Actively involved in the Western Canada Management team to share ideas for continuous improvement in the region.

 
Human Resources

Work closely with the Corporate Human Resource and Corporate Compliance Department to achieve the following:
• Manage human resources within the laboratory including :
• Staff Training Programs (technical, supervisory, and safety) ;
• Staff Mentoring Programs ;
• Performance Management ;
• Staff career development;
• Recruitment, Induction;
• Performance Management.


Other duties as assigned by the Vice President - Canada
 
Physical Demands
• Able to stand or sit for a full shift
• Manual dexterity to perform intricate or repetitive tasks
• Valid Driver’s license
• Occasional Travel est. up to 30% of time
• Work outside of regular hours


About you

The ideal candidate would have:
• Minimum 4 years of related technical supervisor/management experience;
• Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in a technical science, chemistry, business administration or related field;
• Minimum 3 years' experience in analytical laboratory operations preferred;
• Familiarity with all applicable environmental legislation and regulations.

You would also have:
• Strong business acumen including an understanding of financial reporting and language
• employed (e.g. P&L, NPV, ROS, ROI, EBIT);
• Ability to manage Profit & Loss (P&L) accounts ;

The Lab Assistant is responsible for preparing environmental samples for extraction including maintaining adequate production, quality control and turnaround times.
