Mining groups pressure Quebec to improve industry regulations

May 21, 2013

It isn’t only the supply and service companies, government scientific bodies and teaching institutions that work directly or indirectly with the mining industry.

Non-profit organizations are also quite active.

This is the case for the Association de l’exploration minière du Québec (AEMQ), formerly known as the Association des prospecteurs du Québec, which is situated in Rouyn-Noranda.

Since the failed attempt by the Liberal provincial government to review the Mines Act, the prospectors’ organization has made sustained representations to have Quebec mining regulations updated.

After the election of the PQ government in September 2012, the AEMQ condemned, on several occasions, the atmosphere of uncertainty which slows down mining exploration investment in Quebec.

Each fall, two events allow the AEMQ to take advantage of public exposure. In September, the Explo Abitibi Convention brings together over 100 partners of the industry to share their knowledge on various subjects.

In November, the organization supports the Government of Quebec in the organization of the Quebec Exploration Convention. It takes on the responsibility of seeking out sponsors.

Another organization ensures assistance to the manufacturing companies who export their products and expertise - 48th North International. The mission of 48th North International involves companies from all sectors of economic activity, but with the revival of the mining sector, this field has taken on added importance for the organization.

Economic missions, training, nothing goes unnoticed for 48th North International.

In the case of the mining industry, it takes charge of providing support to all Quebec companies. Its role is mainly to assist companies in exporting their products. The intention is to preserve economic vitality in case of a slump in the Quebec mining industry and hence, to stimulate economic growth.
