Belts for Export Facilities

Mar 21, 2021

British Columbia is home to two of the Canadian major international shipping ports located in Prince Rupert and Vancouver. Although there are many business sectors across the ports, Belterra services primarily bulk. Some major bulk exports at these facilities include grain, coal, sulphur, potash, wood chips, or pellets.

In 2017, ports and marine shipping carried almost $90 billion (17 percent) of Canada’s exports to world markets and brought in $110 billion (21 percent) of Canada’s total imports by value.

The Vancouver port is home to 27 major marine terminals, is overseen by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, and is Canada’s largest port. In North America, it’s the third-largest in terms of tonnage capacity and handles over 76 million metric tonnes of the country’s total cargo.

Built as an alternative to the Vancouver Port, Port of Prince Rupert has eight facilities and has a massive reach to the worldwide market. It has efficient operations moving exports like wheat and barley through its food production terminal, Prince Rupert grain. This terminal is among Canada’s most modern grain facilities, with the capacity of shipping over seven million tonnes of grain annually. It also has a storage capacity of over 200,000 tonnes.

Material Requirements

Belterra services the bulk handling facilities conveyor systems that load from rail and transport to storage or shipping. We provide expertise and reporting on all wear components for conveyor systems with a focus on conveyor belting installation and vulcanization. We offer our clients full conveyor system inspections, condition reporting, and analysis.

Specialty compounds and proper carcass selection are required to meet the high-speed and high-tonnage requirements of export facilities. Rubber covered, and either fabric or steel cord carcass belts are used to convey the many types of materials found in export facilities. Strict Canadian regulations require specialty rubber compounds specific to each terminal’s product mix, with some of these compounds including oil resistance, fire retardant, and anti-static.

Our Differentiators

Belterra provides top quality belting and components backed by the best manufacturers in the world. Our solutions specialists are factory trained and provide the latest in system audits and reporting to recommend improvements that increase throughput and decrease downtime. We have the largest professionally trained service department to handle scheduled and unscheduled outages. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified and COR H&S certified, so our process and our safety are second to none.

Through COVID-19, all facilities continue to run at full capacity, with a postponement on conveying capital projects for 2020. Facilities often run 24/7, allowing for short and constantly shifting maintenance time allowances. Belterra understands the traffic challenges in the export business and remains fluid should maintenance time need re-scheduling.

Belterra has been working as a trusted advisor to the bulk handling terminals for 50 years with supply agreements for materials and services. We have the largest presence in materials flow handling in both Prince Rupert and Vancouver bulk terminals. It’s an industry we love being a part of and look forward to continued growth in.
