3M’S New Air and Vapour Barrier Membrane Saves Time and Money On The Construction Site

Apr 18, 2013

Today, 3M Canada Construction announced its new Self-Adhered Air and Vapour Barrier Membrane 3015. This impermeable membrane is a one-step, innovative solution that does not require the use of a primer; increasing productivity and saving money on construction sites.

Using this membrane can reduce close times on a construction site by two to three days. It replaces the time-consuming task of priming and applying the common asphalt-type self-adhered membrane, offering a one-step, easy and quick install with pressure-sensitive acrylic based adhesive. The 3M Self-Adhered Air and Vapour Barrier Membrane 3015 also extends the building season as it can be applied year round at temperatures as low as -18°C.

“As buildings are required to be increasingly energy efficient, ensuring membrane seals keep moisture out and air in, is essential. These membranes allow for significant savings on heating and cooling and at the same time help the environment,” said Steve Gillis, Business Manager, 3M Canada Construction. “The 3M Self-Adhered Air and Vapour Barrier Membrane 3015 not only creates an airtight seal but completely eliminates the time-consuming and weather-sensitive priming step with a truly ‘peel and stick’ application. It is not often an innovative product can have such a substantial impact on productivity, shortening build time and reducing labour costs.”

High Performance: When you need outstanding performance that increases productivity and reduces costs, 3M Self-Adhered Air and Vapour Barrier Membrane 3015 provides outstanding solutions:

Extension of Construction Season: Adhesive provides a unique combination of both cold and hot temperature adhesion to most substrates, which can extend the construction season in many climates. Can be applied from -18°C to 66°C.

Class A Fire Rating: Surface Burning Characteristics are best in class when compared to other asphaltic based membranes.

Air-tight seal: Impermeable to air, moisture vapour and water. Proprietary backing self-seals around nails and staples to prevent moisture intrusion.

Lightweight: At approximately 1/3 the weight of competitive products, the 3M Self-Adhered Air and Vapor Barrier Membrane is easier to manoeuver and lift, allowing contractors to install continuous pieces for the entire length of the roll (75’) if desired.

Adheres to a variety of materials: Excellent adhesion to concrete, concrete block, anodized aluminum, galvanized metal, exterior gypsum sheathing and plywood without the use of a primer.

Environmentally sustainable: Meets the criteria to contribute to the Environmental Quality (“EQ”) Credit 4.1: Low-Emitting

Materials: Adhesives & Sealants under the United States Green Building Council’s Rating System for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED-NC), Version 2.2, Core and Shell (LEED-CS), Version 2.0 and Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI), Version 2.0.
