Meet ASI’s Superintendent and Project Manager, Ship Services

Jamie Nesbitt is known in the industry as dedicated, safety oriented and reliable. According to retired Captain Anil Soni, “That man is a true professional. He is so dedicated to his work.”

 

Jamie has spent the past 16 years providing ship husbandry services. He developed a keen interest in becoming a diver and working in the shipping industry ever since he was young child and credits his fascination with working in water to his father. “My father was obsessed. We were always around water and different ships. I guess that’s where I got it from” says Jamie.

 

When asked what keeps him excited about his job, Jamie says “The jobs are always different. Not one job is ever the same. I like the challenges; nothing is ever routine.”

 

Speaking with Captain Soni about what makes a good superintendent, he says “You want a proper job done, you want someone who has a high regard for Health & Safety, is a true professional, understands the regulations and works well with all regulatory bodies.” He also notes that it is important for the hired diving company to be well prepared; have the proper equipment and ensure that all attending personnel are trained and experienced for an efficient set up. “Sometimes you’re in unexpected situations like performing dives in -18 degree temperatures and your equipment still has to work. You have to know what to do in different situations to complete the job and get the ships out.” Not only is Jamie a professional diver, but a qualified boilermaker and underwater welder approved by Class.

 

Captain Soni reminisces on his time as an onsite Inspector when he worked with Jamie. “When I was an inspector, it gave me comfort to know Jamie was on a job because I knew he and his team wouldn’t cut corners. They were all experienced, and I knew that they would be very safety oriented. As an inspector, safety is the number one priority. It also helped me to know that Jamie was customer focused but would not compromise on safety. He has the personality to work well with government agencies and customers with ease. I remember one time when Jamie was sent away on an international project and they sent another representative. My comfort level with the replacement was low and “Let’s just say, I was counting down the days for Jamie’s return.”

 

Jamie’s current responsibilities as Project Manager and Diving Superintendent includes operational planning, diving operations and supervision. Jamie focuses on developing precise inspection and repair procedures. Additionally, Jamie developed ASI’s first ‘In-water Class Certified Class-B Welding Procedure’. He can be found regularly in ASI’s test tank training ASI’s divers to this class certificate. Jamie has also gained extensive knowledge relating to the designing, engineering and in-house fabrication of cofferdams, in support of shell plate renewal and other mechanical repairs like seal replacements.
