NORCAT's Common Core Training is delivered at NORCAT's Underground Centre in Onaping, Ontario. Courses include Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner, Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner Service Type, Surface Miner, First Line Underground Mine Supervisors and Generic Supervisors.

Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner - Common Core
The Underground Hard Rock Miner program is 4 weeks in duration. This comprehensive training program complies with the standards set out by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU). This program incorporates 2 days of theory including information from the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it pertains to the Common Core modules, as well as an in-depth practical session for the remaining 18 working days of the program. In the practical sessions, all aspects of each module are reviewed and practiced. Every module of the training will be completed to the trainee’s personal satisfaction and to the satisfaction of the instructor to ensure the complete working knowledge and skill required for every module.
 
Each successful graduate of the program will be registered with the MTCU under Program #770010 Underground Hard Rock Miner.
 
The following modules are included in the program:
U0000 - Follow Surface and Underground Induction
U0001 - Perform General Inspection
U0002 - Scale Loose Rock
U0012 - Perform General Lock Out and Tag
 
As well as the standard #770010 mandatory modules, NORCAT also continues the training with an in-depth introduction to a number of Underground Hard Rock Miner Specialty Modules. You will be introduced to specialized mining techniques and equipment operation pertaining to these specialty modules. This will include practical training operating various pieces of equipment.

You will learn the safety requirements and government guidelines that you must achieve to become fully accredited in these modules in the future:

Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner Service Types - Common Core
U0000 Follow Surface and Underground Induction Procedures

The program consists of three computer theory modules that must be completed either on-line or any day Monday to Friday at the NORCAT Training Centre. On the Tuesday following completion of the theory portion, a four-hour practical session is required at the NORCAT Mine. These courses are not transferable to the Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core Program.
 
Once a participant has completed all the theory and hands-on practical training, he or she will receive the paperwork necessary to return to his or her employer in order to be registered with the MTCU.
 
The contractor is also issued a NORCAT contractor pass, which states they have completed their general orientation training and underground service training.

Surface Miner - Common Core
The 1 day Surface Miner Common Core program consists of 28 modules in total. NORCAT performs the first 3 modules (Section 1) as they are the core minimum modules for entry to a pit, quarry, or excavation site. The 25 specialty modules (Section 2-6) are available upon request.

Supervisor Training

Common Core for First Line Underground Mine Supervisors

The three training elements include computer-based training, classroom instruction, and hands-on task demonstrations.

• U6108 Assess, Control and Apply Ventilation Systems in Workplaces
 
To be registered in Program # 770121 you must have:
• A current, standard level Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) approved, first aid certificate; and
Full Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core accreditation, Program #770010. Modules U0000 to U0012.
• Meet OHSA requirements for competent person.
• It is the candidate’s responsibility to inform the local Apprenticeship Client Services office of a change of name, address or transfer to a new employer and provide documents as required for registration.
 
To be accredited in the Underground Hardrock Mining First Line Production/Development Supervisor Common Core Program, the employee must have demonstrated competency in each of the above 770121 Program Modules.
 
Courses are delivered over a minimum three month period with one week each month for classroom and field instruction. A final complete audit & exam is required after four to six months on the job.
 
All candidates must be employed by a sponsor employer WITH APPROVED MTCU SIGNING AUTHORITY.

To be registered in Program # 770141 you must have:
• A current, standard level WSIB approved first aid certificate.
• As a minimum, MTCU accreditation in the mandatory modules from the appropriate common core program 770130, 770150, 770210 or 770225.
• Meet the requirements for ‘competent person’ as defined in the OHSA legislation.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to inform the local Apprenticeship Client Services office of a change of name, address or transfer to a new employer and provide the required documents for registration.
 
To be accredited in the Generic Supervisor Common Core Program, the employee must have demonstrated competency in each of the above 770141 Program Modules.
 
All candidates must be employed by a sponsor employer WITH APPROVED MTCU SIGNING AUTHORITY.
