Dura21

Dura21 helps businesses with three things: Reducing cost, increasing revenues and providing an environmental advantage. They do this through their Duragenic process - a patented approach that uses root cause failure analysis and cryogenic technology to increase the durability and safety of metal parts. Dura 21 also uses ceramics and welded overlays to extend the service cycle and protect metal machine parts.

Dura21 currently serves the mining, milling, smelting and refining industries in the Sudbury, Timmins and Kirkland Lake areas. They help companies realize higher productivity and lower part costs by extending the service life of machine parts and perishable tools by as much as 15 times.

When Dura21 began in January 2011, they had one employee and no sales. Within 18 months, the company grew to five employees with significant monthly sales and a strong market outlook. As the company continues to grow, they will increase their clientele and apply their patented processes in other industries around the world.

In 2012, Dura21 formed a partnership with another NORCAT resident who builds machine parts used in their cryogenic process. Dave Dillon, owner of Dura 21, stated that “the relationship occurred as a result of both companies occupying adjacent space in the NORCAT Centre. The culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration that resonates in this facility is the single reason that we were able to form this meaningful partnership.” Dave also says that his toughest challenge as an entrepreneur has been “trying to change the way things have been done in the mining industry over the last 30 years in the Sudbury Basin.”

At NORCAT, we encourage and provide an environment where networking can easily occur between our residents and clients. When a partnership comes together and the new entity works to address a big market opportunity, we know we are accomplishing our goal of providing the right programs, services, and space to drive sustainable job and wealth creation for our country.

MyCommittee

MyCommittee is an easy-to-use, online web application that allows users to skillfully manage boards, committees, and other groups that meet regularly. MyCommittee is dedicated to improving committee work for businesses, non-profit agencies and community groups through the use of “best practice” guidelines and tools. It is also one of the first web applications to utilize cloud technology, which enables clients to centralize their information and access it from any location.

MyCommittee creates a user-friendly way for members to create agendas and minutes, follow-up on assigned tasks, collaborate through forum-like discussions or threaded messages, and manage and share documents. The application also offers a range of productivity tools that allow users to create polls for member feedback, create and export lists of resolutions in several formats, view meeting statistics, and access MyCommittee on iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry devices.

NORCAT has been fortunate to work with such a talented client as Jeff Sutton of MyCommittee. Jeff says, “the difference between NORCAT and the other development organizations I have interacted with is that NORCAT was intent on finding a way to assist as opposed to simply following the process. Always available, NORCAT listened, questioned, and suggested possibilities.” MyCommittee houses their servers at NORCAT, which ensures that all client information is in a secure centralized location and accessible 24/7. Since working with NORCAT, MyCommittee has acquired 17,000 clients.

Jeff is an insightful and innovative entrepreneur and we look forward to seeing what he comes up with next!

Symboticware

Communicating Big Data Underground!
When he first started out, Symboticware’s CEO Kirk Petroski’s goal was to develop a technology that would monitor and regulate productivity in an underground mining environment.  This technology would also ensure worker safety, company sustainability and profitability.  To achieve this he and his team created the SymBot, a device that takes advantage of real-time data collection and analytics to achieve this lofty goal.  Since then, Symboticware has partnered with local mining companies to test and use their technologies, and has also recently ventured into new markets both nationally and internationally with projects in the United States and South America.

Over the last few years Kirk has worked closely with the team at NORCAT.  Through this relationship, NORCAT has been able to connect him with the resources he needed in order to achieve his goals and address needs specific to his start-up.  Attending events such as the NORCAT Hot Topics Series have also helped him to continue learning and improving his business by injecting it with new ideas. According to Petroski, NORCAT has been extremely helpful, not just for him, but for also fostering an innovation and entrepreneurship community here in Sudbury.

“The NORCAT team has been phenomenal and a great asset to our company. When I started the company five years ago, Northern Ontario had certain areas of support to offer, so to fill the gaps we sought out people and organizations in Toronto. Today however thanks to organizations like NORCAT most of these resources and understanding of the innovation and commercialization process are now available for entrepreneurs located here in Sudbury” says Kirk Petroski, CEO of Symboticware.

As a result of being able to access these resources, Symboticware has successfully taken four products to market, with another set to be available within the next six months.  The company’s most successful products include the SymBot (hardware/software device that collects, formats, and forwards information from remote locations) and the Speed Guard (prevents mobile equipment operators from speeding in the mine).  All their products are designed and developed here in Sudbury.

Advanced Health Monitoring Platform

Take Control of your Health! Home healthcare diagnostic kits the way of the future
In 2010, Jeff Sutton and his team of doctors and biochemists founded Advanced Health Monitoring Platform (AHMP), a start-up venture focused on providing an innovative solution to address a multi-billion dollar global market in enabling people to better monitor and take ownership of their health.

This point-of-care / in-home diagnostic system uses the technology of the Smart Phone, the chemistry of bioluminescence, and the simplicity of a glucometer-like testing, that when packaged together becomes sophisticated and inexpensive home-testing analyser to assess levels of various chemicals and toxins in our bodies. With this information, users can then make real-time adjusts in their diet, seek medical attention, or better manage dosages of vitamins, food types, exercise, among others to ultimately lead healthier lives.

So how does it work? Users provide a pin prick blood sample on AHMP’s patented disposable diagnostic chip that is comprised of reagents which emit light when reacting with various chemicals in your blood. The concentration of certain chemicals in your blood will be proportional to the amount of light that is emitted from the bioluminescence reaction. Users insert the diagnostic chip into AHMP’s “base-station” where the user’s smart phone camera then “reads” the intensity of the light emitted. The phone “App” uses special program algorithms and standard bio-chemistry analysis to produce quantitative results which can be stored in the user’s own health monitoring record.

Currently these types of diagnostic tests are order by a physician and performed in medical labs, but with AHMP, users will be able to monitor and test their health at their own convenience, which in turn will allow them to take greater ownership over their health and make better decisions to maintain healthy lives.

NORCAT has been working closely with the AHMP from the very beginning providing market research services, support in product design, testing, and prototyping, funding, and business mentorship.

“The best attribute of NORCAT is their ‘down-to-earth’ attitude with their clients. Rather than simply referring us to others, NORCAT asks “how can we help you grow your business?” They truly embody the spirit of an innovation centre by their ability to listen to our needs and then work with us to solve our problems as quickly as possible” cites Jeff Sutton, founder and President of AHMP.
