   The process incorporates a number of specific steps:

 

Define: Identification of "critical to quality"characteristics and the development of a map of the process to be improved.
Measure: Determination of key process steps and inputs along with valid metrics to monitor the progress of the project.
Analyze: Determination of problem causes and how to eliminate gaps between existing and desired levels of performance.
Improve: Identification of creative improvement solutions as well as the consequences if improvements take too long or are not made at all.
Control: Implementation of tactics to ensure that, over time, key variables remain within acceptable limits in order to maintain process improvement gains.
