Babbitt Bearings expanding operations

KARA WILSON, The Expositor Canadian Babbitt Bearings Ltd. at 64 Dalkeith Dr. is expanding its plant to allow it to produce larger products.

Canadian Babbitt Bearings Ltd. is expanding its Brantford operations so it can do more work inhouse - a move that's already led to seven new jobs.

The manufacturer, at 64 Dalkeith Dr., just north of Lynden Road, makes babbitt bearings used in heavy equipment. The expansion will allow the company to house an 18-foot boring mill, meaning it can build larger pieces of equipment on site.

"This allows us to do in-house what we've been doing before, when we had to outsource some of the work," president Daniel Russell said in a phone interview Wednesday.

"Being able to do the work here means a quicker turnaround."

Russell said more jobs could be added this year to meet demand.

"It's a niche market - not huge - but we hold approximately 4% of it. Any heavy rotating equipment uses babbitt bearings, " said Russell, noting that the company's employees are highly skilled.

The company's website lists a number of its projects, including building segment bearings for the Three Gorges power project in China.
