Finning Canada – Heavy Vehicle Maintenance Facility

Jan 26, 2016

Reducing environmental footprint in the Oil Sands

To keep pace with the growing demand for mining equipment support, Stantec designed a 16 bay service support facility in the Caribou Energy Park in Fort McKay. This over 18,500 square meter, $100 million facility supports the maintenance and repair of heavy mining equipment.

Before a large piece of mining equipment can be brought into the facility for repair or maintenance, it must first be washed to remove any debris that could cause a safety hazard. We designed a wash bay system consisting of 14 water cannons surrounding the mining trucks on three levels – eight on the main level, four on the lower mezzanine, and two on the upper mezzanine. The water used is treated and recycled through an elaborate system to achieve recycling rates of over 95 percent. Also, the raw process water system is supplemented with rain water captured from the roof of the building.

With strong international demand for commodities continuing to drive expansion in the mining industry, this project is the largest capital investment that Finning has completed in its corporate history.
