Oakville Team Levitt-Safety extinguished the competition at the FireFit 2012 GTA Regionals in Brampton last weekend.

The team, made up of members of the Oakville Fire Department, took first place in three out of the four events: individual, relay and team.

In doing so, they have earned themselves a bye to the final day of the FireFit 2012 Canadian National Championships held in Baie-Comeau, Quebec over the Labour Day long weekend.

The Firefit 2012 competition is what is most commonly known as a Firefighter Combat Challenge, where competitors race through an obstacle course which simulates the actions that a firefighter might use on the job.

The obstacle course consists of a stair climb, a hose hoist, a slalom run, a hammer pound, a hose water target and a dummy drag.

Captain of Oakville Team Levitt-Safety, Shaun Henderson, said he was pleased with his team’s performance last weekend, which featured Josh Gowanlock, Darren Van Zandbergen and Dave Walker.

“It was nice clean sweep,” said Henderson.

Henderson had the fastest time of the day in the individual competition posting a time of 1:19.35.

The Oakville firefighters snatched first place in the team category, putting up a time of 4:17.39.

Oakville Team Levitt-Safety also came out on top of the relay event, eliminating every team they faced including Brampton in the finals.

Oakville Team Levitt-Safety is ranked second in Canada going into the nationals and are looking forward to facing the number one ranked Kamloops team for supremacy.

“That Kamloops team has been on top and they are the team that needs to be knocked off,” Henderson said. “We’ve made some improvement and if all goes well, we will definitely give them a shot.”
