COUNCIL UPDATE – COVID 19 & BUSINESSES

Mar 26, 2020
This morning Council met to discuss the Council’s precautionary measures for this COVID-19 virus and the businesses within the community.

In working to ensuring the health and safety of our citizens and residents living in the Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit territory, known as Moraviantown, the Council is supporting the Lunaapeew Business Development in the closure of the community-owned businesses, namely Tim Hortons. As a result of Tim Hortons franchise being a walk-in business, we are required to close the building which includes our Gas Station. Therefore, both businesses will be closed, effective today (March 26th) at 9:00 p.m. tonight and will re-open at 6:00 a.m. on Monday April 6th.

As earlier reported, the COVID-19 virus was restricted to the elderly. This is not the case today, this virus knows no age group … anyone can be exposed and get sick. Not to display any negativity towards our employees and loyal customers, we feel that we cannot take the chance of not knowing who they have been in contact with because this virus is now spread through contact. So in order to protect our community’s health, the closing of the community-owned businesses was needed.

In our messaging to the community and the local individual businesses operating within our territory, the Council is strongly advising that they do the same. We need to take this seriously as it is all of our responsibility to protect our citizens and residents. Should the businesses remain open, we ask that they take precautionary measures by wearing protective gloves and practice social distancing, along with continuous disinfection on any surfaces where there is human contact.

We will be issuing individual letters to the businesses, along with an information flyer about today’s Council’s update.

To date, we do not have any confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus in our community and we would like to keep it that way. However, should there be a confirmed COVID-19 case in the community, the Council will exercise its authority to close all businesses.

For the health and safety our all our citizens and residents, Please everyone …. stay home, stay healthy, take care and be safe.
