Galaxy Announces Expansion to Next Generation Hughes HX 4.0 Platform

May 29, 2013

Mississauga, Ontario – Galaxy Broadband Communications Inc., a Canadian satellite communications company that provides IP networks to the Resource, Government, and Enterprise markets in North America, announced today that it will be adding the next-generation HX 4.0 System from Hughes to its Toronto hub.

Galaxy currently has in operation five Hughes HN Systemhubs and has selected the HX 4.0 hub from Hughes to expand its existing Ku-band service on G16 serving Canada and the United States. Since 2006, Galaxy has served its customers with Ku-band capacity on G16. The new HX hub will be added to that capacity, enabling the delivery of both HX and HN class services through a single Network Operations Center (NOC). Galaxy is the first independent operator in North America to purchase and deploy a full HX 4.0 Gateway. This offers significant advantages such as increased speeds to 10 Mbps, mesh networking capabilities, enhanced video streaming support, higher QOS capabilities, and automatic beam switching, enhancing mobility for vehicle mount and maritime services with shared or dedicated plans using the same terminal.

“Our customers are deploying applications that require faster speeds and more stable data processing, especially on the upload side for applications like video, security, large camp morale services, and rig data applications,” stated Rick Hodgkinson, president and CEO of Galaxy. “We will now be able to offer the enhanced capabilities of the HX90 and HX200satellite terminals to support these high performance applications.”

In addition to adding HX to its G16 North American coverage, Galaxy is launching a new HX-based network on Ka-band to cover the resource rich areas of Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We are extremely pleased that Galaxy selected the HX platform to expand their network capabilities,” said Sam Baumel, vice president, SME Sales & Marketing at Hughes. “Galaxy has substantial expertise in high-QoS applications and supporting the mission-critical communications needs of enterprise customers. The HX platform provides Galaxy with significant performance advantages today, and will enable Galaxy to meet and exceed its customers’ needs for years to come.”
