The Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) is the State’s lead agency in attracting private investment in resources exploration and development through the provision of geoscientific information on minerals and energy resources, and management of an equitable and secure titles systems for the mining, petroleum and geothermal industries.
 
It also carries prime responsibility for regulating these extractive industries and dangerous goods in Western Australia, including the collection of royalties, and ensuring that safety, health and environmental standards are consistent with relevant State and Commonwealth legislation, regulations and policies.


Mineral Titles

A key role of the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) is to provide an efficient and timely mining title approvals process, which is essential for guaranteeing the sustainability of the resources sector and the State’s future prosperity. All exploration and mining titles in Western Australia are administered in accordance with the Mining Act 1978. The types of mining titles include prospecting licences, exploration, retention and miscellaneous licences, and mining and general purpose leases.
 
The Mineral Titles Division is responsible for the administration of these mining titles and maintenance of title registry systems (Mineral Titles Online and Tengraph® Online), that provide current information on land availability and details on mining tenements in Western Australia.
 
Products and services provided by the Mineral Titles Division include advice on land access matters, land availability, processing and determination of mining title applications, maintenance of the title registry system and administration of statutory requirements of tenement holders.
 
* Payment of Mining Act fees and charges can now be made at the customer service counter Perth or any of the regional offices by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFTPOS) or credit card. At this stage mining tenement rental payments cannot be paid by credit card.
 
A credit card limit of $25,000 applies per transaction. The Department accepts Visa or MasterCard and if the credit card transaction limit of $25,000 is exceeded, the transaction will be rejected.
