The Red Sea: Unlocking Future Hydrocarbon Potential
Hurghada, Egypt

This workshop is under the patronage of H.E. Eng. Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

In November 2018 SEG, in collaboration with GANOPE, held the first workshop on Red Sea Exploration. The success of this workshop has made a great impact not only on the understanding of the Red Sea hydrocarbon potential but also on the exploration activities and the positive response from the international oil companies to the recent bid rounds starting a new exploration era. The Egyptian government has taken major steps to accelerate the exploration of the Red Sea, acquiring new geophysical data and conducting geoscience studies with consideration of similar rift-basins worldwide.

The Red Sea is a promising frontier mega basin with potential hydrocarbon exploration opportunities for prospective stakeholders. It extends southward from the proliferous Gulf of Suez rift where outcrops and subsurface data show that the elements of the petroleum system should also extend to the south. Comparative study of analogue basins is a key to the success of future exploration in the Red Sea.

Following the successful 2018 workshop, SEG and the Egyptian oil sector believe it is the right time to assess what progress is being made, what still needs to be tackled and lesson learned from the new data. Moreover, how can we achieve our ultimate goal to accelerate Red Sea exploration and unlock its hydrocarbon potential?

This workshop will focus on the Egyptian Red Sea, global similar basins, and emerging technologies, particularly for offshore hydrocarbon exploration and case studies from around the world.

Who should attend?

The workshop targets regional and international geoscientists, engineers, experts, decision makers, and investors interested in understanding the exploration potential of the Red Sea. The workshop will provide insights into the complex geological setting of the entire Red Sea basin through various well designed sessions including rift processes, structural and stratigraphic framework, petroleum system modeling, geophysical data acquisition, processing and interpretation, innovative technologies as well as deep water drilling.

The workshop will also provide a unique opportunity to study the surface geology and examine the outcrops in a two day well designed field trip lead by Red Sea region experts from Egyptian academia.

Workshop format

The format of the workshop will feature presentations by invited key experts who will share their experiences. It will provide a unique opportunity for open and extended discussions among the participants.

Ten sessions (three days). We will aim for one keynote speaker per session with a closing session at the end of the workshop to serve as the outlook going forward. The oral presentations are comprised of 20-minute talks followed by five minutes of Q&A. After each session, a 30-minute discussion session is planned. The objective of this session is to allow participants to discuss in detail and learn from each other what has worked for them and debate the issues and challenges facing them during their daily workflows. Session chairs will also serve as discussion leaders during the 30 minutes.

Poster presentations are welcome to give delegates ample time to discuss the poster topic with the author(s). Posters will be available for viewing in the workshop room during coffee breaks and afternoon free time following each session. Students are encouraged to submit poster presentations for the workshop.
