Lighting

LED lighting is fast becoming the leader in corporate, church and theatre applications. While in some situations the initial start-up cost can be higher, the maintenance and power costs are significantly lower. Comparatively it has a lower overall cost than conventional lighting and meets many corporate green initiatives.

VW, RGB, RGBA, & RGBW

LEDs come in various designs, the most common being RGB (Red, Green, Blue) in which the color mixing is done outside the fixture and the three colors mix to form the desired color. The A and W refer to Amber and White, these are added to give more accurate skin tones as well as make the whites more accurate. Variable White LEDs are used specifically for replacing PARs, Fresnels and Ellipsoidals.  When accurate skin tones are needed for television and live performance, a VW fixture is a perfect fit.

LEDs also come in versions in which the LED Color mixing happens within the fixture.  When looking at the fixture it is the same color as what it is projecting.  Whereas, in typical RGB Fixtures when looking at the fixture separated Red, Green and Blue LEDs are seen.

LEDs have a general rating of 40,000hrs before end-of-life.  In a church application being used an average of 10hrs per week, the LEDs would last 70+ years.

Examples of LED Lighting

Conventional lighting still has its place.  The light output, lensing options and purity of conventional lighting have stood the test of time for a reason. However, this reason is getting harder and harder to justify.  With the huge improvement of optics, light output, color mixing, and low power consumption an LED solution should be strongly evaluated.
