Oil Change & Lubrication

Dec 18, 2015
Oil Change, Lubrication and Other Fluids

Doing Oil Changes is one of the most important things you can do to extend the operating life of your vehicle.

Automobile engines have many moving parts. As these parts move and rub against each other, the force of friction creates heat. Oil lubricates the engine and absorbs heat, allowing the internal parts to work together effectively without overheating.

Over time, engine oil breaks down and wears out. When it does, it becomes less effective at lubricating the engine and absorbing heat. As an automobile owner, your goal is to change the oil in your engine before it breaks down and causes major engine troubles.

So how often should you change your oil? It depends on many factors, including the way you drive, how old your engine is and where you live. Recommendations in the marketplace and manufacturers operating guides range from 3,000 – 10,000kms. For most people, an oil change every 5,000kms would probably be just fine. You might want to consider changing your oil more often, if you tend to drive at high speeds, have an older engine or live in an area that is particularly hot, cold or dusty, do a lot of stop-and-go vs. highway drive – it is not an exact science. What happens if you don’t change your oil regularly – you engine won’t last as long.

In addition to regular Oil Changes, you also need to consider a multitude of other types of “fluids” that allows your vehicle to operate in its optimal condition.

Transmission Fluid
Automatic Transmission fluid not only lubricates the hundreds of moving parts inside your transmission; but also helps to keep contaminants away from critical (and expensive) parts. Replace your transmission's fluid and filter every two years or 40,000km's, or as directed in your owner's manual.

Chassis lubrication
Your vehicle's suspension and chassis contains numerous moving parts that are very susceptible to wear when proper lubrication schedules are not followed.

Power steering fluid
Dirty power steering fluid can damage your vehicle's power steering system leading to an expensive repair. In the worst cases, failure of the system can occur causing a potential safety problem as your vehicle will become very hard to steer. Fluid should be flushed and replaced at regular intervals as recommended in your owner's manual.

Most fluids for our vehicles have gauges or levels to check within the engine compartment. You should make a habit to check these periodically throughout the year as loss of any of these could cause your vehicle to break-down.

When you bring your vehicle into an OK Tire location for an Oil Change or Fluids maintenance your vehicle will also undergo a full 100 point inspection which may uncover some unforeseen futureexpenses.
